Challenge Coin History

Our custom challenge coin sets

Our custom challenge coin sets represent heroes in our communities as varied as police officers, firefighters, first responders, and nurses — but also pay homage to heroes from our history who changed the world, from the brave pilots who flew bombers covered in Nose Art during World War II to the courageous men and women who helped save lives during the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City.

Challenge coin history

Hero Societies is part of a long, storied tradition of challenge coins that traces its roots as far back as World War I.

Initially, challenge coins were used by military personnel to establish a sense of belonging among their peers — carrying them to symbolize their membership in a particular unit and foster a shared identity.

As challenge coin meaning evolved, commanders began using challenge coins to recognize exceptional achievements within their ranks. Challenge coins became symbols of honor and tradition, and “challenging” someone to present their coin and prove their worth grew in popularity.

The “challenge” of a challenge coin involves the holder producing their challenge coin when prompted. If they can’t produce their challenge coin at will, the holder might be tasked to do menial work or buy a round of drinks as a consequence. This element of surprise and camaraderie further solidified the significance of challenge coins.

Over time, challenge coin traditions expanded beyond the military. Government agencies and even civilian groups began to adopt challenge coins to represent pride in their identity, values, and achievements. Organizations now create custom challenge coins or custom challenge coin sets to symbolize the shared causes or affiliations of their members.

Challenge coins continue to be exchanged to symbolize appreciation, recognition, and solidarity within businesses and clubs. Challenge coins are also used to commemorate special events, celebrate achievements, and foster a sense of belonging.
